The winner list (first draft) of the 2025 China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling (Guangdong Division) was released on October 8. Teams from Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) broke a record and won 73 prizes, including 13 first prizes, 22 second prizes and 38 third prizes, which ranks the 15th among universities in Guangdong province (totaling 115), and the first concerning the number of first prizes and total prizes awarded among Guangdong’s private universities. The team that consists of Zhang Luyao, He Weiling and Xu Siqi supervised by Hu Xindan and another that includes Fu Yuhan, Ye Jiahao and Huang Jinghong supervised by Zhang Qingping outshone in the contest for their outstanding modelling skills and innovative solutions, which are recommended to the appraisal of national second prizes. It mirrors that GCUT’s students possess solid professional knowledge and good teamwork spirits, while also proving GCUT’s achievements in the cultivation of application-oriented talents.

Listed as one of the 19 contests included in the “ranking of academic contests for college students” for the first batch, China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling was initiated in 1992, which is reputed as the largest-scale mathematical contest in modelling that enjoys greatest recognition. There were 6886 teams from 115 universities participating in the contest, with participants surpassing 20,000. Consequently, the fact that GCUTers outshone in the contest fully reveals the solid groundwork and innovative strength for the cultivation of application-oriented talents.

One of the reasons why they could achieve fruitful results lie on GCUT’s attaching great significance to it while making good preparations for it. Guided by Wu Lihao, a faculty from GCUT’s School of Computer Engineering and Big Data, the mathematical modelling team initiated the preparation for the contest through organizing several rounds of its publicity and mobilization, which attracted 142 teams totaling 426 students to participate in it. GCUT’s School of Computer Engineering and Big Data organized an advisor team with 23 supervisors for the overall improvement of students’ mathematical modelling and practical skills. Drawing on a two-week intensified training during the summer vacation, they centered around systematic teaching on modules such as software operation, statistical model, algorithm optimization, computational methods, and academic writing dependent on labs and devices provided by GCUT’s Computer Lab Center, which created a favorable environment for students to prepare for the contest.

GCUT’s mathematical modelling team has gradually built a structured and professional team with competitive students that won abundant prizes in the field so far. Moreover, it cultivates talents for high-level contests such as “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition and China College Students’ ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. GCUT will keep deepening the teaching reform with students as its priority and strengthen the platform building for interdisciplinary practices in the future, thus injecting new momentum for the cultivation of high quality application-oriented talents.
