The list of the Top 300 of the iF Design Student Award 2026 was announced on May 16, on which a student named Fan Chengzhi from the School of Mechanical Engineering & Robotics Engineering of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) was included. It not only mirrors Fan’s strength and innovation, but proves the achievements of GCUT’s practices and education on innovation as well as the quality of talent development, which also reveals GCUT’s teaching quality and strength of its education regarding its major of Industrial Design.

Reputed as “Oscars of the design world”, the iF Design Student Award is held by the iF Industrie Forum Design since its foundation in 1953. It is well known for its prize-winning principles featuring “independence, precision, and reliability”, which enjoys great authoritativeness and influence in terms of global product designs. The iF Design Award 2026 received over 7,000 works from 68 countries while iF Design Student Award attracted participants with over 7,000 works from more than 80 countries every year, which is specially set up for global young designers. Only 300 works can be shortlisted, whose rate of being listed is less than 4%. Fan’s work outshone in the fierce competition with its innovation, intricate design and great practical values, which is remarkable and hard-earned.

The listed work entitled AIRS is an intelligent automatic driving robot with rapid response system for traffic accidents that is created by Fan under the tutelage of Zhang Xiaoyu and Chen Jiatuo from the Teaching and Research Section of Industrial Design of GCUT’s School of Mechanical Engineering & Robotics Engineering. The robot can independently arrive at the accident scene once receiving alertand finish three key tasks efficiently, namely, instructing people to implement temporary emergency medical care with vehicle first-aid kits based on thermal imaging and telemedicine guide; generating 3D model of the accident scene which reaches centimeter-level precision that realizes no losses in collecting evidence; and real-time sending all related data to the traffic safety management platform, based on which traffic police can remotely hold the responsible to account and authorize related parties to move their vehicles, whose average of traffic dispersion increases 70%. The innovation of the work can be seen in saving golden 10 minutes after the accident by preposition of professional rescue with its design that operates urgent rescue, fixing evidence, and traffic dispersion at the same time, thus creating great social and practical values.

Liang Wenjun, Director of the Teaching and Research Section of Industrial Design of GCUT’s School of Mechanical Engineering & Robotics Engineering, pointed out that Fan’s achievement lies on his own efforts and talent, which also cannot leave without the guidance and devotions of related faculty. Moreover, his winning the award serves an appreciation to the teaching quality and talent development of GCUT’s Industrial Design while further revealing its strength of school running and achievements in talent development.

The Teaching and Research Section of Industrial Design of GCUT’s School of Mechanical Engineering & Robotics Engineering will keep deepening its reform on education and teaching and enhancing its disciplinary construction and practical teaching in line with its excellent teaching methods so as to foster more outstanding innovative talents with strong practical skills. It is expected that GCUTers will continue to make more achievements in the future.
