The opening ceremony of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) was held on the afternoon of September 7, marking the beginning of their university journeys.

Secretary of CPC Guangzhou City University of Technology Committee Zhang Jiangong, President Su Cheng, Vice Presidents Zhou Shiyao, Liu Jianbo, Shang Qichao, and Wang Zhichen attended the ceremony. Chiefs of GCUT’s schools, administrative offices, freshmen counselors, representatives of class supervisors as well as freshmen were also present. Vice President Wang Zhichen presided over the ceremony.

President Su Cheng welcomed the newcomers on behalf of GCUT and delivered a lecture themed onHeading for a Brighter Future on a New Journey,through which he proposed four tips for freshmen:

The first tip is “unity”, which serves as a prominent spirit of GCUT. Journey in the university is not living on a lonely island counting on oneself but working together with a group. In the future, you will feel the warmth from your schoolmates when you fight for your academic competitions, polish your assignments, or complete your social practices with your teammates. I hope that you can get along well with your team, findingthose who are willing to team with you, collaborating with and supporting each other to embrace mutual growth, thus fulfilling yourselves.

The second tip is “truth-seeking”, serving as GCUT’s academic integrity, whose meaning lies not only in engaging in idle talk while being unable to act on their high minded theories, but delve into solving actual problems based on what you have learned with your questions. Liang Shiwen from GCUT’s School of Economics, spotted the difficulties of the traditional ERP system for small and medium enterprises such as unmatched data and slow inventory turnover when he prepared for China International College Students’ Innovation Competition and conducted related survey in business and trade enterprises with his team. Consequently, they were granted an applied patent while winning a national prize in the competition. I hope that you can concentrate on laying a solid foundation in your study, put what you have learned into actual practice, and serve the society with your knowledge and skills.

The third tip is “inheritance”, which bears GCUT’s responsibilities. This year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China as well as the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army’s Long March (1934-36), reminding us that the baton was passed on to you by history. GCUT always stick to such devotion to family and country that “attachment to GCUT, contributing to the revitalization of the Chinese nation”. GCUT’sBase for Party Building and Student-Fostering newly-built in last year not only presents the glorious development of the Communist Party of China, but mirrors GCUT’s growth rooted in the southern Guangdong province through serving the society. I advise that you should visit it more frequently, integrating yourselves into China’s future through passing down such spirits from our predecessors while turning their faith to your motivation, thus locating your pursuit in the tides of the times and growing into a GCUTers with responsibilities who care about their family and country.

The last tip is “innovation”, a great task shouldered by GCUT. From the birth of ChatGPT in 2022, DeepSeek in 2023, to various AI Agents such as OpenClaw nowadays, only the spirit of innovation stays afresh when the world and technologies keep changing. Faced with several technological challenges, GCUT’s Wujiang No.1 Aeromodelling Team eventually won the national second prize in the Tri-Co Robot Challenge of the World Robot Contest through overcoming difficulties and countless upgrading. Instead of an imagination, innovation appears itself during the process of locating and solving problems to achieve the breakthrough from none to one. I hope that you can stay curious and keep improving yourselves, thus growing into a better version of yourselves while making innovative ideas come true.
