President Su Cheng of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT), Dean of GCUT’s International Business School and Director of GCUT’s Office of International Exchange and Cooperation An Ran, and related staff of GCUT’s Office of International Exchange and Cooperation paid a visit to Portugal invited by the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE) and JOINCO from May 25 to 29. This is the first time that GCUT sent its delegation to Portugal, where GCUT’s first overseas practice base for integration between industry and education has been set up at the headquarter of JOINCO.

Visiting the headquarter of JOINCO, where gave birth to GCUT’s first overseas Industry-Education Practice Base

GCUT’s delegation visited the headquarter of JOINCO in Lisbon from May 25 to 26, meeting with Dr. Paulo Cunha, chairman of JOINCO, Mr. Pedro Cunha, CEO of JOINCO, and Mr. Tiago Mateus, manager of JOINCO that set up in China. During the visit, they announced the establishment of “GCUT-JOINCO International Business Industry-Education Practice Base”, marking that GCUT’s first overseas industry-education practice base has been set up, which creates a new chapter of GCUT’s international coordinated cultivation between university and enterprise.

The delegation also visited JOINCO’s core departments such as strategy, finance, export, logistics, and design as well as its companies set up in Portugal, Poland, Colombia and China in order to form a comprehensive understanding of JOINCO’s development, orientation, strategies and operation modes. Centering around students’ internship and employment, mutual guidance of students’ theses, and courses on integration between industry and education, GCUT and JOINCO reached several cooperation intentions. Moreover, they further discussed specific implementation of arrangements of international internship, dual-supervisor system of university and enterprise, and courses integrating real cases of enterprise, thus laying solid foundation for their further cooperation.

President Su also visited students from GCUT’s International Business School who work as interns at the headquarter of JOINCO. It is the first international internship program that GCUT has sent its students overseas. They gave a speech on the analysis of purchasing data, communication with suppliers, and collecting of market information in detail, who won appreciation from JOINCO’s management level with their competence, professional dedication, and passion for learning.

Visiting ISCTE to deepen university-enterprise collaborations

GCUT’s delegation visited ISCTE, where they held a talk with its President Professor Helena Carreiras, Vice President Professor Ricardo Paes Mamede, Deputy Dean of its Business School Professor João Guerreiro, and commissioner Joana Jordão in charge of international exchanges and cooperation.

GCUT put forward the innovative cultivating path integrating three parties featuring “semester-based exchange and international internship” during the talk, implying that GCUT’s students could seek short-term internship at the headquarter of JOINCO in Portugal when they finished their semester-based courses at ISCTE. Meanwhile, ISCTE’s students can also choose academic programs provided by GCUT and find their internship at JOINCO set up in China. ISCTE thought highly of the approach, believing it can integrate education with internship that realizes the upgrading from international exchange to “international exchange + international practices”. Therefore, it provides a new approach to coordinated cultivation between university and industry, which is feasible and worthy of promoting. ISCTE pointed out that they would give full support to it including internship supervisors, course matching, academic credit transfer, students’ visas, and accommodation. They also discussed over students’ short-term exchange, postgraduate recommendation, mutual visits of faculties between two universities, and doctoral programs.

GCUT’s delegation visited the main campus as well as core teaching buildings and basic facilities of ISCTE accompanied by Vice President Professor Ricardo Paes Mamede and Vice President Professor Jorge Costa to further the understanding of its disciplinary and international school running, and its open and inclusive campus environment.

Recommended by JOINCO, GCUT’s delegation also visited United Lisbon International School while getting in touch with significant local business and academic institutions such as Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Portugal-Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Lison Branch of Bank of China, thus expanding GCUT’s cooperation network, which greatly improves GCUT’s international reputation and influence in Portugal even in Europe.
